Home Security Devices

In the past, people didn’t need to lock their doors. They didn’t worry about having their homes broken into by intruders. If they were worried, they bought a dog. A big dog! In today’s world, some kind of home alarm or even better yet, a home security system is almost a necessity to provide security to your family and property. Having a security system not only ensures your family’s well being and keeps your stuff safe, it can potentially lower your home insurance fees.

A quality lock system for both your doors and windows is the first and easiest upgrade you can make to your home. If you’ve just purchased a new home, be sure to check the locks to ensure they work properly and don’t wiggle. You also might want to think about changing the locks out. A lot of times you can simply change out the center of the lock (known as the barrel) without changing the entire lock. Though in some cases, if the lock is not of good quality, consider completely changing the lock out.

A Closed Circuit Television system, or CCTV, gives you the ability to keep a watch on everything that is occurring around your property. These are especially useful if you have a large house with a lot of land. They enable you to view every inch of the property, including all of the dark, hidden areas. The cameras used in this type of system can be large or small, depending on your preference. Some people like larger cameras because they may be more of a deterrent. Others prefer smaller, inconspicuous cameras that aren’t such an eye sore. The newer, digital cameras are sometimes smaller than a cell phone.

Some home security alarms provide key fobs (like a car), allowing you to control them from a distance. These fobs allow you to turn the system on and off and sometimes include a panic button that allows you to active the entire alarm system while also alerting authorities.

Another option some systems include is a remote control. Some remotes work in a similar way to the key fobs, while others have many more features. They sometimes even include a full key pad and a talking feature.

Other than installing a complete electronic system, purchasing some simpler security devices and can also be a good decision. Window and door sensors are items that will sound an alarm if the window or door is opened without authorization. These are especially useful on the ground floor where it is easier for potential intruders to try and gain entry to your home.
